GERMANY: LOGISTICS MARKET IN GERMANY Q1 - 2011

Surge in turnover

Take-up of warehouse and logistics space in Q1 2011 was exceptionally high. Nationwide, it totalled around 1.43 million m², representing a year-on-year increase of 71 %. That is by far the best result of recent years. The gratifyingly positive economic development has stimulated markets and set many business firms back on an expansionary course. The record result was due above all to an entire series of major deals. First and foremost, there were the two lease contracts concluded by online trader Amazon in Rheinberg and Graben. Each of these involved almost 110,000 m² of space, so just by themselves they accounted for some 15 % of the total. In all, 46 % of aggregate turnover comprised leases upwards of 20,000 m². But demand in the smaller and mid-range size categories was also lively. The relatively uniform distribution of the remaining turnover is an indication that the dynamic market development is broadly based.
